Sammi Hide - Editor of Struggling Authors

Interview by R Grayling

We finally managed to pin down our editor and get her to reveal a few truths about her inner self - or her writing at least. If you want to speak to Sammi direct - please email her at editor 'at' strugglingauthors.co.uk

So Sammi, you are interested in fiction and non-fiction. What do you think you will end up writing in the future? Or do you see both as possibilities?

I'm planning to make journalism a career, and will be beginning to study it early next year so on a daily basis I will be writing nonfiction. However, I think there's something much more enthralling and entertaining about writing something entirely from your imagination, so hopefully I'll carry on writing fiction as well.

How does your current 'day job' help with your writing career?

As I work as a library assistant I'm constantly surrounded by books, and I think that helps as it introduces me to books I wouldn't normally come across, so I'd say it's helped to open my mind to different styles of writing.

So who would you say is your favourite author?

Probably
Danny Wallace for non-fiction (although his books are funny non-fiction rather than serious stuff!), and I honestly couldn't choose between Sophie Kinsella and Marian Keyes for fiction.

What book(s) are you reading at the moment?

At the moment I'm re-reading
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows , and I'm also reading The Last Empress by Anchee Min which is a stunning book.

A question which is always of interest to me is - do you keep a writing journal?

Not as such. I don't write everything in the same place, but I've learnt to my detriment that if I don't write down ideas as soon as I have them then they tend to disappear from my brain entirely, so I do have a folder with various scraps of paper with ideas on, as well as numerous files on my computer.

Finally, what projects have you got on at the moment and what's on your schedule for the near future?

I'm currently organising a RaW (reading and writing - see the link at the top of the page) event with work. We weren't doing anything to promote it so I came up with a sea themed fin day to encourage families to bring along their children, have some fun and learn about RaW at the same time.

Many thanks for your time Sammi and keep up the sterling work!

A pleasure
