Jeanne Johnson Interview

By Sammi Hide

Jeanne Johnson is the wife of January’s author of the month, Dan Bessie. She is also the author of a collection of short stories named ‘Starlings in the Park’.

So Jeanne, ‘Starlings in the Park’ is a collection of short stories; six about children, six about captivity and six about couples. Did you intentionally divide them up in this way, or did it evolve naturally?

It evolved that way really. It started with three stories about children, and two or three couples ones – some of which are semi autobiographical. I’d begun writing some of the captives stories and had put them to one side. When I realised I had a potential collection of short stories I went back and improved them.

All of the stories in the book are fictionalised versions of ones you’ve heard over the years. Would you say it’s harder to write about someone you know, or do you feel it gives your writing an extra edge?

As you said, all of the stories are about people I’ve known, although I’ve known some more that others. There are elements of things that I heard when I was working as a counsellor, and two of the stories about chronic fatigue are autobiographical.
Really it was an emotional release – it was like conducting my own counselling sessions, so it was good for me and I think it did help my writing, yes.

Starlings in the Park’ includes stories you’ve collected over the years, but when it came to putting them on paper how long did it take?

It probably took a couple of years altogether, but I didn’t write continuously. I’d written two or three of the stories before I met Dan, but most of them were written at the start of a new marriage in a new country. I think it’s important not to force it, but to write when the mood takes -I like to write in bed!

Do you think it’s important to have someone who understands the writing process to help you along, and how has Dan’s support helped you?

I think it’s tremendously important! Dan’s been a great help and we spark each other off. We also edit each other’s work, which is great. I think it’s important to be aware of each other’s strengths and weaknesses, and be open to criticism. We always say that Dan loosened my writing, and I tightened his! It helps to bring a new perspective to your work, and I think you need to be able to share your work with someone you know will be honest. Writers groups can be helpful for that.
Thanks Jeanne, it was lovely speaking with you.
