Use Google Maps to explore a location
Sometimes it's difficult to write about a place if you haven't been there for years or it's just too far away. So, with the aid of Google's fantastic maps, you can now almost be there! We give you a quick lesson on using this brilliant tool. No more, 'The street was long,' and more, 'The street was long and narrow, with shops lining one side and houses the other; cars parked willy-nilly on either side.'
Launching Google Maps
Pop along to Google at
www.google.com and click on the MAPS link above the search box. Then type the post code or name of the place you wish to explore. Click on Search and sit back.
Changing your view
If you would prefer to see proper satellie photos of the place then click on the button at the top right hand side of your map. You can have normal 'map' view, satellite photos or a hybrid blend of the two sohwing pics with road numbers etc.
Zooooooming in and out
When you want to get closer to your subject then you can zoom in by using the control panel on the left hand side of your map. Zoom in and out using the + and - slider or move left, right, up and down by using the directional arrows. The button in the centre of the arrows will return you to the last search result. Try searching for 'Eiffel Tower' - you can zoom right in and see the people underneath the tower - amazing!
Play around with the results
As with anything, the more you use it, the more proficient you become. Try searching for places of interest around the globe and see just how detailed the pictures are. Hopefully, it may save you some money in air fares - but remember, 'Travel broadens the mind'.
