Be a character in a book!

*Competition details taken from the recent interview with author, Gary Murning:

"Finally. When we first spoke you mentioned an exciting competition prize – would you care to elaborate for our readers?

Ah, yes -- thanks for reminding me about this, Richard. As you've already mentioned, I'm currently working on what should hopefully be my third Legend Press novel and it occurred to me, whilst working on it, that it might be fun to offer readers of If I Never the chance to have their name used for one of the characters in my fourth novel. So, if any of your readers are interested, all they have to do is answer the following question:

Q. In If I Never, what is the name of Tara's mother?

Answers should be submitted using our contact form and a winner will be randomly selected from all those with the correct answer. The closing date for the competition is April 30, 2010 -- so if you haven't yet read If I Never, you have plenty of time to do so!"

Aspiring Writers Short Story Competitions

Following the success of their first Short Story competition, and the many requests from members to have more of these, the Aspiring Writers group is delighted to

announce that they will now be running MONTHLY competitions.

At the end of the year the winning entries (along with a bio on each author) will be collated into one book and sold on a leading e-book site. All the proceeds will go to a charity chosen by the monthly winner who has received the most votes by the members in a grand final. The rules are as follows:

Each month there will be a different genre which must be adhered to.

Only one entry per month by each participant.

Length of story not to exceed 715 words (this is for technical reasons).

The Judges will consist of members of Aspiring Writers (who won’t be participating).

Results will be given out two weeks after the closing date of each monthly competition.

Once the monthly competition has been announced, participants. will have two weeks to complete their entry.

The stories MUST be original and not a part of another story.

The first competition will commence in February and an announcement will be made nearer the time regarding the genre. I hope everyone will have as much fun both participating and reading as we all had with the first.

Good luck to you all.

UPDATE: JAN 2010 (Below)

LinkedIn Groups

  • Group: Aspiring Writers
  • Subject: Aspiring Writers Short Story Competition for February

I know you’ve all been chomping at the bit to get going on the new monthly short story competition, so I thought I would give you some extra thinking time for the February and our first monthly competition.

The genre for our first monthly competition is: HORROR.

The rules of the competition are as follows:

Content to be no longer then 715 words
Closing date for last entry 12.00 midnight G.M.T Sunday 14th February 2010
(winner announced two weeks after)
Only 1 entry per member
The stories MUST be original and not a part of another story

The stories will be judges on the following criteria:

Originality
Quality of writing
Adherence to the genre
Broad based appeal
And most importantly – Did the judges enjoy it.

I hope this gives you some food for thought and gets those creative juices flowing yet again. As I stated in my earlier announcement, at the end of the year the winning entries, and maybe a few of the runners up (along with a bio on each author) will be collated into one book and sold on a leading e-book site. All the proceeds will go to a charity chosen by the monthly winner who has received the most votes by the members in the grand final.

There is no need for members to vote at this stage, (although you can comment) but for the grand final, you will be able to vote for the overall winner on the designated e-book site.

To enter this competition you must join LinkedIn and then join the Aspiring Writers group. Click here > www.linkedin.com

Exciting new opportunity for writers – A Novel Ending

Paperbooks Publishing is pleased to announce an innovative idea for writers – a ‘half book’ to promote novel writing and offer a new way to discover writing talent.

The book titled ‘A Novel Ending’ will be published in October 2009, and will begin with 10,000 words written by Paperbooks author Gary Davison. Printed with blank pages, authors will be invited to complete the novel. The winning writer will get a publishing contract with Paperbooks Publishing.

Tom Chalmers, Managing Director of Paperbooks comments ‘This project is an exciting opportunity to find new writing talent, offering something a little bit different to the traditional submissions procedure. We are keen to develop innovative ways to find new authors and build-on our existing successful list by discovering new talent.’

The competition will be open to all writers, whether established authors or previously unpublished. The project offers a new and interesting writing challenge, with authors invited to interpret Gary’s storyline and theme in any way they wish.
