Bag of Bones - by Stephen King
I have put another Stephen King in here because a) I rate his writing and b) This particular book is a masterpiece in showing us how to create very likeable characters that we can empathise and root for (obviously extremely important). I couldn't put this book down due to the fact that I was on the protagonist's side from page 1. Bag of Bones
The Colour - by Rose Tremain
This book is filled with some of the most beautiful descriptive language I have ever read. The story draws you in but the reason this is listed here is the fact that some of her sentences need reading over and over again. The kind of writer we aspire to be. The Colour
The God of Small Things - by Arundati Roy
This is an excellent example of somebody taking the English language and doing something new with it. Full of absolutely idyllic phrases and descriptions. I didn't care about the story (which was not particularly for me) I just loved the language! The God of Small Things
Cloud Atlas - by David Mitchell
Spectacular epic. A brilliant example of moving through time as this book takes you on a journey through the centuries. Well rounded characters pin the whole thing together - if you want to see what is possible - READ THIS BOOK! Cloud Atlas
